Getting Started with MindTime: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know to set up MindTime and start meditating. From your first session to custom soundscapes and tracking.
What Is MindTime?
MindTime is a meditation timer with 100+ curated ambient soundscapes. It gives you full control over your meditation sessions — set your timer, choose your sounds, configure your bells, and track your progress over time. There are no guided meditations or narrated courses. MindTime is for people who want to meditate on their own terms.
Your First Session
Getting started takes less than a minute:
- Open MindTime and you will see the timer screen
- Set your session length — start with 10 minutes if you are new to meditation, or choose endless mode if you prefer to sit without a deadline
- Choose a soundscape from the library, or leave it on silence. Rain, ocean waves, and forest ambience are popular starting choices
- Tap start and close your eyes
That is it. No account required, no onboarding quiz, no course to complete first. Just a timer and optional sound.
Exploring Soundscapes
MindTime's soundscape library includes over 100 curated sounds organized by category:
- Nature: Rain, ocean, forest, birds, thunder, wind
- White noise: Pink noise, brown noise, fan sounds
- Healing frequencies: Binaural beats, solfeggio frequencies
- Lo-fi and ambient: Soft piano, lo-fi beats, ambient drones
- Bowls and bells: Singing bowls, crystal bowls, chimes
Browse the library and tap any sound to preview it. When you find something you like, it plays during your next session.
Using the Sound Mixer
The sound mixer is one of MindTime's standout features. Instead of choosing a single soundscape, layer multiple sounds together:
- Open the mixer
- Add your first sound (e.g., rain)
- Add a second sound (e.g., singing bowl drone)
- Adjust individual volume levels until the blend feels right
- Save your mix for quick access later
Popular combinations include rain with soft piano, ocean waves with binaural beats, and forest ambience with a low singing bowl. Experiment until you find what works for you.
Configuring Meditation Bells
Bells mark transitions in your session. MindTime includes 13 bells:
- Start bell: Signals the beginning of your session
- End bell: Gently brings you out of meditation
- Interval bells: Soft reminders at set intervals (e.g., every 5 minutes) to bring your attention back without jarring you
Choose from singing bowls, crystal bowls, gongs, and more. Each bell has a distinct character — preview them in settings to find the ones that resonate with you.
Tracking Your Practice
After each session, MindTime logs your meditation automatically. Over time, you can see:
- Your current meditation streak
- Total sessions completed
- Total time spent meditating
- Patterns in when and how long you practice
Tracking is not about competition. It is about visibility. Seeing a streak of consistent practice is one of the most effective motivators for maintaining a daily habit.
Tips for New Meditators
- Start small: 5 to 10 minutes is enough. Consistency matters more than duration.
- Same time every day: Attach meditation to an existing habit (after morning coffee, before bed) so it becomes automatic.
- Do not judge sessions: Some sessions will feel focused, others scattered. Both count. Show up and sit.
- Use bells: Interval bells help you notice when your mind has wandered without feeling like a failure.
- Try different sounds: What works for morning meditation may not work for evening wind-down. Explore the library.
